It has to be something with the AMDS (I'm on Windws 7 (64)). Apple killed off XP versions and even installing on manually it still won't start the service. I just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. In the properties menu it was no automatic but it just wasn't started. Right-click on Apple Mobile Device service and click Properties in the shortcut menu. Message me if it does not work.
